Today on the blog I thought I’d share my top 5 quirky and quick garden hacks and tips with you! I love gardening and growing, so I thought I’d share how I manage to squeeze it in alongside my busy schedule.

We’re keen growers in our home, and you can see from our other posts about gardening that we tend to have a tight budget, but we also like to make our outdoor space a pretty place to be! We currently have no grassy areas, living in the city means you tend to get a yard (if you’re lucky!), but it doesn’t mean you can’t grow! Read on to find out how to have a beautiful garden, wieven if you have a small space and a small budget…

Shop around. Don’t buy the first thing you see; check out online discounts, price things up with several retailers and don’t rush in and buy the first thing you see! You can also use a fab site called Garden Toolbox, which allows you to check out reviews ahead of your purchase. It’s a great resource, and very handy to discover top tips and the best products out there for your garden.

Recycle anything you can. From pots and pans to cups and wellies, reusing items for planters can make a garden look completely magical. Not only that, but you’re also preventing the whole landfill disaster from getting any worse, so reuse and recycle, it’s a win-win situation!

Make it. If you need something new for your garden, don’t be afraid to make it yourself. From windchimes to tables made from pallets, it’s worth giving it a go! You could make it a family tradition to create beautiful outdoor art or have a project for your little flower garden, working together halves the workload and creates gorgeous results.

An hour a day (or anything you can spare!). Try to do a little bit each day, and you will reap the rewards. Leaving everything to one weekend in May probably won’t help your garden or your bank balance. If you weed, tidy, water each day, you’ll see the benefits within as little as a week. Keeping on top of your garden is key, so commit to a small amount of time each day.

Attend free/cheap workshops and events. Look out for events or workshops (such as the RHS Flower Show or Bute Park events here in Cardiff) as they often involve free planting sessions. We are currently growing strawberries thanks to the RHS, and last year we grew lettuce with the Education Centre in Bute Park, Cardiff. Seeds are cheap though, so even if you don’t get these opportunities, you can still pop to your local supermarket and pick up some seeds to plant. All it will cost is your time, and if you manage that well, then you’re sorted.
