Movie Review and DVD GIVEAWAY: Miss Arizona
Last night Zoey and I settled down to watch Miss Arizona, a story about a young woman, Rose, who was crowned Miss Arizona 15 years ago, who is now trapped in a loveless marriage and her only job focuses on ‘running the household’ and sticking within her monthly budget allowance.
Rose is trapped and miserable, but one day she accepts the opportunity to teach at a women’s shelter. She is there to talk ‘life skills’ but suddenly she’s drawn into their world, thanks to several emergency situations. The five women end up on an all-night adventure through L.A., with the hopes of reuniting one of them with her children. Meanwhile, Rose is on a path of self-discovery and she’s loving it!

With a 4.6 IMDB rating, we didn’t have the highest of hopes for this movie. However, once we got stuck in, we thought the 4.6 rating was a little harsh…
Rose (Johanna Braddy) plays a soft, yet silently strong, character within this movie. As the story progressed, the more she grew on me, and I really loved how she presented the character of Rose on the screen. Rose grows beyond belief form start to finish, finding the inner strength to go her own way in life, thanks to the women she spends 24 hours with.
Robyn Lively (yessss, you know, Teen Witch – one of my faves!) performs as Leslie, the woman in search of her children. I really loved her performance in this movie; very understated and real. It was also a very important story line and a topic that needs to be addressed much more. The other women in the refuge included Shoniqua Shandai as Jasmine, Dana Wheeler-Nicholson as Maybell and Otmara Marrero as Sammy. They all had various personalities and their own backstories, and it worked well within the film…
For me, the character that stood out the most was Johnathan Wallace’s performance as Luscious. Luscious and Rose have a really intimate chat midway through the movie, and it was really thought-provoking and emotional. I loved this part of the movie the most – it actually brought a tear to my eye!
The ending wasn’t as amazing as it could have been, but it tied all the stories up nicely. I think there could have been a touch more heart within the story, as well as deeper dialogue, and sense of humour now and again may have created a bit more of a flow to the film as a whole.
Overall, we enjoyed it and it gave us a lot to reflect upon. I’d definitely give this a 6/10 and it’s perfect for those cosy nights in when you need a pick-me-up!
