Rainy Day Activities For The Family

 

We have all been there. The school half term comes around and you’ve had a multitude of outdoor adventure activities to do with the kids. You wake up on that first morning and you can see nothing for the raindrops covering your window. Your kids were really looking forward to going to the beach, so what do you do now?

 

The reality is, we really don’t have to go outside to have fun with our children. We can have as much fun in the house, it’s all about being prepared for when those rainy days do come around. Whether you have a drawer or a cupboard full of toys and supplies at the ready, or you’re willing to wing it, we recommend that it’s best to be prepared!

 

Here’s a couple of ideas from the team at Martello on those rainy day activities. Make sure you stock up on supplies, you never know when you may need them!

 

Board Games

Board games don’t have to be ‘boring’. However, in the minds of children the most obvious, old school ones seem to be. Head on out to your closest toy store or see what Amazon currently have on offer. There are lots of updated versions of older board games as well as some completely bonkers new options that are bound to keep your kids giggling constantly.

 

Baking

Children love getting messy and baking is the perfect way to do that but also have something delicious to eat at the end of it! Whether you choose to pick up a kit that has all the ingredients ready to go, or you’re up for trying something more challenging, baking can be exciting for all! There’s nothing quite like watching a child do something from start to finish and seeing their smile when they see the result! Now, will it be cookies or cupcakes this week?

 

Crafts

It’s no surprise that the team here are arts and craft mad. Having a big box full of art and craft supplies is the best way for your kids to get creative at home. We have a box full of glitter glue, modelling clay, glitter pom-poms, pipe cleaners alongside your usual suspects of colouring pensand activity paper. It’s a great activity to get your children’s creative minds whirring, giving them full reign of what’s inside your craft box and seeing what they create. They’re often lovely memories to look back on too!

 

Fort & Den Making

If you’re not too precious about your home, this is a really fun one. Gather all the pillows and duvets you can find, combine with a few chairs for structural support and create your own inside den or fort. Decorate with fairy lights and your children’s favourite toys and you’ve created a little nook that can be used for more activities. Whether you choose to use the area for a family reading session or for your little one to nap whilst you do some household tidying, it can be helpful in a number of ways!

 

Cinema Trip @ Home

Pull up the sofa so you’re facing the TV, rent a movie online or shop through your stash for something you haven’t seen in a while and create that cinema experience in your own front room. A quick dash to the shops for some of your favourite treats and homemade popcorn and you’re ready to go. TIP: Have some extra fun with the children by using your craft supplies to make your own cinema tickets! It certainly is the little things on rainy days that make them pass faster!
