How Important is Data Protection in 2019?
*Collaborative post
In May 2018 new GDPR laws came into force and the world seemed to lose its head. I remember being in several Facebook groups where every single post related to GDPR and the concerns everyone had and it makes you wonder, how important is Data Protection in 2019?
How Important is Data Protection in 2019?
When it comes to personal data, companies have to abide by certain rules so that they’re not breaking the law and also keeping your details 100% safe. I am always very wary of sharing my data, from email addresses to our home address, I always double check who I’m sharing with and what I’m sharing.
When it comes to data breaches and GDPR, it’s very important to know where you stand and what you can do to protect yourself.
Seareach® have created a very interesting infographic all about the Biggest Data Breaches of 2018. Seareach® are certainly doing their bit to share this important information, but also offer a service to help keep your own businesses safe and your stock in the right place! And as for their infographic, I think it’s quite an eye opening read…
I think this information is slightly terrifying, because we truly do not know how ‘protected’ our details are, especially when it comes to these huge worldwide companies.
However, when it comes down to personal data, how safe can it ever truly be?
I think the GDPR changes will hopefully improve the insecurity of online data, but from looking at the above infographic, it seems unlikely! I’m not even sure how we can truly trust our details with anyone, especially when payment information, such as credit card details, are found to have been breached during 2018 (after the GDPR changes came into effect!).
I thought it would be good to pop together a list to help you make sure you keep your data as safe as possible:
- Use strong passwords
- Use different passwords for different accounts
- Regularly update your security on all your devices
- Don’t click through links in emails asking for your password
- Be very aware of phishing emails
- Turn off your computer
- Disable Bluetooth
- Always make sure there’s a padlock on any sites where you’re required to enter passwords and personal information
- Don’t access bank accounts or other personal services through public Wi-Fi
- Don’t leave your devices unattended in public places
