Today on the blog I’m focusing on health, and how you can go about managing your physical health with DEXA Scan. Your body is your temple, so treating it well is key to a healthy future.

Managing Your Physical Health with DEXA Scan

Physical health is just as important as mental health, and they tend to go hand in hand. This means that by having a DEXA scan you can clear your mind of worries, as well as have a full picture of your body’s health.

A DEXA scan covers a few areas, from bone density to body composition. DEXA (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry) uses x-rays to discover the distribution of lean muscle, fat, water and bone in a person’s body. Two safe and very low dose x-rays are used to measure the various areas of your body. It takes less than 10 minutes and you get your results immediately.

Below is a bit more detail on each part of the scan:

Bone Density

The Bone Densitometry test measures the strength of your bones. It s used to identify osteoporosis, which can then indicate your chance of potential fractures. If there are any issues, you can follow this up with a bone density scan through your GP. This would take 10-20 minutes, it’s completely painless and the radiation is minimal.

This scan is generally aimed at women age 65+ and men 70+, as well as a broader selection of people listed here.

Body Composition

This covers body fat, muscle and bone composition. This is usually used by athletes, fitness folk and dieters to keep track of their progress. It shows overall body fat, breakdown for legs, arms and torso, visceral fat and more. It can give you a baseline, something to work from, if that’s your goal, as well as prevent any further damage if the scan flags anything up.

A DEXA scan is perfect for anyone looking to find a baseline for future health awareness, as well as anyone with specific concerns about their bone density. Having been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, I would love the chance to have a full scan to check the risk of developments in other areas.

You can use their search page to find out where you can get your very own DEXA scan, and how much it would cost.

Have you ever been for a DEXA scan? Would you like to try one? Let me know in the comments below…
