Does Listening to Your Favourite Music Impact Your Driving?
Sometimes, you can’t beat blasting music in the car while driving and this can really make the experience more enjoyable and help to pass the time. While it can improve the experience, have you ever wondered how it could impact your driving? This is an important consideration and you might find that listening to music could be dangerous whether listening to classical or heavy metal.
Speed
Many people find that they actually drive a lot faster when listening to music, especially if it is uptempo, fast and/or heavy. While it can be a great feeling driving while listening to a genre like rock, you might actually find that it causes you to drive faster than you normally would and this could be dangerous (you also need to make sure that you are aware of the speed limit on the road you are driving on).
Distractions
Another common safety issue when listening to music when driving is that it can be distracting. This can occur with any genre, but rap music or any song with a lot of lyrics and/or complex musical arrangement like classical music could be a distraction and stop you from fully focusing on the road ahead. Not only this, but music can also block out other sounds which can be dangerous and is why you should never listen to music so loud that it stops you from being able to hear anything else.
Alertness
Similarly, you might find that music stops you from being as alert as you would normally. Ambient music, orchestral music and anything that is relaxing or immersive could impact your alertness and stop you from being as engaged as you should be while behind the wheel.
Could Improve Focus
While some will argue that listening to music takes your focus away from the road and is unsafe, there could also be an argument that listening to music helps people to stay focused and sharp. If you are on a long journey or stuck in traffic, it can be very easy to become bored and lower your alertness. Listening to music could keep you engaged and keep your energy levels high so that you can focus on the road. Whether it’s your own car or a lease, you want to keep it, and you, safe at all times.
Deciding What is Best
The key is to find what works best for you and listen to music that will keep you engaged without negatively impacting your performance. You should also listen to this music at a level that will not completely shut you off and consider turning it off/down during times where you really need to concentrate.
It can be a great feeling listening to music while driving, but you do need to pay attention to how it impacts your performance and make sure that your focus is always on the road.
