Getting the Best Deal When Scrapping Your Car
*Collaborative post
If you need to scrap your car, you will naturally want to get the best price. Sadly, there is no a massive value in scrap, for example, a Ford Focus might get something in the region of £129, whereas a Land Rover Freelander might fetch £170. The price is actually variable and as well as taking into consideration the size, make and model of the car, dealers will be looking at other factors so here are a few things you can do to make sure you get the best price.
Don’t break the vehicle
Some people swear by breaking vehicles, which involves removing parts to sell separately. There may be some value in parts, but you can also run into trouble when it comes to trying to scrap what is left. First, the obvious point that it will be worth less money to the dealer, but secondly you could find a problem with removing certain parts. If you end up with oil, steering fluid and other hazardous liquids and materials, you could also end up with the bill for disposing of them correctly. When you take into account the time and effort to strip parts now, your return on the effort is generally not worth it.
Find a local scrap yard
If you happen to find a scrap yard further away, paying more for your vehicle, have a look at what this might involve. If the car doesn’t run and needs to be collected, you will end up with a bill for staff and transport. It is better to use an ATF Accredited dealer as well. If you are concerned work with an agency where all the checking is done, and they only recommend legitimate dealers to you which means they are government approved.
Time the sale
If possibly look to scrap your vehicle early in the month. Demand for scrap services increases towards the end of the month when paydays are due, and this can mean they offer lower prices because they are swamped with people wanting their car scrapped now.
Don’t pay £25 for a missing logbook
With an AFT accredited dealer, this shouldn’t happen, but many less reputable places will try and convince customers that a vehicle cannot be scrapped without the V5C and charge you £25. This is simply not true; it is not needed. If you scrap a car without the logbook, you do need to send a letter in place of the V5C slip to DVLA, but there is lots advice available on how to do this.
Add Social Value
Ok, this isn’t related to the vehicle as such, but did you know that if you scrap a car with a company like Car.co.uk, you will be supporting our social value. They are committed to adding value to communities and as such, are working with a range of organisations and charities that are improving life in the local and national area. From helping homeless people to creating breakfast clubs for children who do not have access to breakfasts at home, their customers contribute to a range of social value projects.
