Every person has their subject in school. For example, John might be an ace at history, while Megan is an all-star student in math. Still, there are not a lot of students that would consider writing as their specialty. Why? Well, because 1. It is a difficult thing to do, and 2. Writing is subjective at points, making it difficult for people to get a real sense of how good of a writer they are.
Whatever the case may be, with communication becoming more online every day, it is essential for students leaving college to have great written communication skills. Stepping into the business world, where emails are a main form of communication, can be very strange. Young professionals go from texting their friends in acronyms to dissecting every last word typed out in your email.
So, with that being said, how can students become better writers? Well, there are a lot of ways, but a good place to start would be through reading the three tips below:
Writing
Practice makes perfect, right? Not exactly, but practice does enhance one’s skills over time. For instance, the best athletes in the world train day after day just to get better at their respective sport. Still, those athletes are practicing and training their bodies. When it comes to writing, people are practicing and training with their minds.
To become a better writer,
you have to keep writing. That may not be great to hear depending on your enthusiasm for the subject, but by writing time and time again, you train your brain to better communicate through words, something that is essential in the business world today.
Reading
Reading makes you a better writer, seriously. Similar to how writing over and over trains your brain, reading also trains your brain, whether you notice it or not. By reading consistently, you get to see how information is effectively communicated. Whether it is through a tweet, Facebook post, magazine article, or the story on the cover of the New York Times, it does not matter. Absorbing and digesting words of any kind will help you in the skill of writing.
For example, if you were to read an article with an unknown word and you find the definition for said word, you have now added it to your vocabulary. In turn, this gives you the chance to weave that word into your writing because you understand it.
Using School Resources
The best advice that can be given to become a better writer is through consistent reading and writing, as stated above. At the same time, that does not mean you should not explore the other ways to become a better writer. For example, many colleges and universities have student accommodation through writing centers, a variety of writing courses, and club activities. Whether or not you want to become a better writer is up to you, but the tools are there for you to succeed.
