Last night Zoey and I were lucky enough to catch Hollie McNish at Wales Millennium Centre. I am HUGE fan, so I was super excited to be able to show Zoey just how magnificent poet Hollie is!
Honesty, Humour and Heart: Hollie McNish at Wales Millennium Centre
I remember seeing Hollie in a video on Facebook many years ago, and her words stuck with me forever. Her poetry really hits the spot, from day-to-day parenting stuff to the weird and wonderful world inside her mind; she’s fantastic. I saw her a few years ago with Vanessa Kisule and she was epic, so I was beyond excited to see her last night!
The performance took place in the Ffresh Bar, a place full of magic and wonder (think copper trees and mood lighting). Joining her was Welsh poet Clare Potter, and her set of poetry was completely different to Hollie’s, offering a fresh contrast between the two performers.
Clare’s performance really made me think about my own past, and I loved her passion as she performed on stage. I think she was a delight to listen to, and I loved her tender performance; she was truly lovely to listen to.
Hollie, as usual, didn’t disappoint! Her poetry is so utterly relatable, with poems focused on motherhood and being a woman. Her use of language is just sublime, and I sat lost in a world of words as she spoke. The entire performance was faultless, with her personality and humour shining through as she chatted to everyone in between poems.
I loved all of her poems, they’re quite simply perfect. I adore her performance too, perfectly timed and she spoke with passion and genuine love for her words, experiences and the audience.
Listen to her perform Breasts in the video below…
Her Plum collection of poetry follows her over the years, and it reaches into your soul and connects you to her. The words and rhythm is just pure pleasure to listen to, and as she stood on the stage I prayed the show would never end. Her poetry binds you to the spot.
Go check out her tour here, and book tickets, and get VERY VERY excited… You’re about to hear something wonderful!
