Review: The Bodyguard at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff
If you don’t know the storyline shame on you then let me tell you. The story follows Frank Farmer as he struggles to maneuver through his life as a bodyguard. He is assigned to protect the greatest star in the world, Rachel Marron (you know, Whitney in the movie?!) from a threatening psychopath. During their time together they begin to fall in love, and face many dangerous situations together. When they finally catch the crazed murderer and Frank is shot, they end up having to let each other go…
If I’m being honest, I’ve never really understood the ending, but that’s the romantic in me. In my mind they drive off into the sunset together, but in the movie and the stage show, they part ways 🙁
Review: The Bodyguard at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff
The centre was bustling with excitement, so we found our seats amongst the excited chatter, and then we were plunged into the show! I won’t give it away, but the opening scene made me jump out of my seat…
The stage and set was out of this world. From moving scenery to smooth scene changes, I was pretty mesmerised by how it all worked to create a seamless storyline. On top of this, the lighting and special effects were really impressive, however I did find a lot of the visual recording of the actors a bit too cheesy for my personal taste.
When it comes to costume, well I was in awe. Everyone on the stage looked amazing, but Alexandra Burke’s costumes were glorious. How she changed so often I’ll never know, what a legend! As fro her performance as Rachel, I’m not sure anyone else could have taken on this iconic Whitney role. She was sensational throughout, with a voice that could take the roof off (in a beautiful way!). I loved her stage presence, she was like a goddess in sequins!
Alongside Alexandra was Rosie Cava-Beale who performed as Rachel’s sister, Nicki Marron. Hats off to her for holding her own alongside Alexandra, it must be a daunting role to take on. However, Rosie rocked it, and she really made me feel emotional during some of her solo scenes. They also seemed to have the best chemistry on stage, which really helped bring the story to life.
