It’s World Book Day and I thought I’d share my top 5 favourite books with you here on the blog today. I’m going to keep with a more (kinda) grown up theme, but if you’re keen to check out a list of my favourite kids books then head on over to the Rebel Tribe blog to check out the children’s book list.

World Book Day: My Top 5 Favourite Books

It’s so hard to narrow these kids of things down, especially when you love soooooo many books and you also have a huge TBR (to be read) pile. What if one of those books belongs at spot number 3?! Anyway, I’ve whittled it down and these are the books I’m left with…

  1. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

I remember picking this up and reading it within days. It clutched at my heart and I was completely hooked. I love how it’s written, how it jumps through time (and back again), how in love the two main characters are and just the overall feel of the book. It’s a heartbreaker and I look forward to reading it again someday…

      2. Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh

This book changed my life. I remember reading it and thinking, ‘I want to be a writer!’. The language, dialogue and characters were beyond anything I’d ever read before, and it left me changed forever. In the end I quit my teaching degree and went off to study creative writing… best decision ever. Thanks Irvine!

     3. The Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins

I can’t help it. I love a bit of YA writing and my novel is written for the same audience. I love the series, and I love how attached I became to certain characters, especially Finnick Odare. I love the depth of the characters, and even though I was disappointed with the ending, it made sense in the grand scheme of the books. These books made me want to edit my novel once again and I haven’t stopped (much) since reading them….

     4. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Who doesn’t love this book? It’s a complete classic and should always be so. I remember reading it and devouring the pages within days. I love the characters and the storyline, and it has a movie counterpart that actually works! I adore this book and I look forward to reading it with my two little ones in a few years time.

    5. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

Another book that made me want to dust off my notepad and pen! This book blew me away with its imagery and misogynistic themes, I spent the whole time reading it rooting for Offred and praying she’d survive and then the ending hit me like a tonne of bricks! Writing this post is the only thing stopping me from picknig it up right now so I can dive right back into her world once more…

Of course, there are many others I could add, from amazing writers such as Jeanette Winterson or the fantastic May We Be Forgiven by AM Holmes. There are so many amazing novels out there, what would your top five be?
