How to Plan Travel in Retirement
*AD
The idea of retirement can be a daunting one, but when it comes with the prospect of travel, what’s not to look forward to? Today on the blog we’ll be talking about travel in retirement, and how to plan for it!
How to Plan for Travel in Retirement
I don’t know about you, but the idea of travelling once the children are fully grown gives me butterflies in my belly! We love our children dearly, but I think one day we’d quite like to go travelling just the two of us, and retirement seems like the perfect time to do it.
Organisation
When it comes to travel of any kind, being organised is a key priority. If you don’t have a plan, then things could go horribly wrong. So planning your trip is probably the first step in this (very exciting) process. Sit down together with a pen and a notepad, and write down all the things you need to do ahead of the trip. Think about the following points…
Finance
When it comes to funding your travel, there are some key elements to help you along the way. Hopefully you’ll be able to fund your travels so you won’t have to work as you go, but don’t rule this out because it might be the only way to make the trip work. Ideas for income could include letting your home out to other people whilst your away, or running it as an AirBNB if you have someone you trust to manage it. You could also dip into any savings you’ve accrued over the years, or make sure the trip is super low budget so you don’t need to worry at all. I love the idea of travelling in a motor-home so you don’t have to worry about accommodation.
Essentials
Make sure you have a list of key essentials, and when I say essentials, I mean things you really NEED to take with you. Don’t be too precious, you need to be practical. It’s all about essentials when you travel, so make sure you work together to decide what should be on the list and what shouldn’t. You might also want to consider selling your car, or loaning it to a friend whilst you’re away.
Health Checks
I know, it’s so grown up (and a bit boring), but making sure your health is all good before you go. Book in with your doctor to get a full check over, and make sure you have enough medication (if you need any) for the entire trip, or a way to get hold of more depending on where you travel. Your health is key to the trip, so don’t brush it under the carpet.
Travel Insurance
Making sure you have travel insurance is key. You don’t want to run into any trouble and end up in a difficult situation that prevents you from enjoying your trip. Search out the best deals and make sure it’s all sorted ahead of the trip, you won’t regret it!
Attitude
Having the right attitude for the trip will make the whole adventure much more incredible. Go into it knowing your strengths and weaknesses, be open to change, and make sure you’re planning is flawless. If you have a positive outlook, you’ll find any bumps in the road easy to smooth out…
When it comes to travel in your retirement, being organised and honest with yourself about what you can and can’t achieve, are the most important factors. If you’re determined and keen to make it happen, it will! Be positive and make a plan, the rest will fall into place.
