I haven’t met anyone who hasn’t dreamed of travelling, but when it comes down to it, we need to remain safe whilst on the road. There are certain obvious things to be careful with, but today I’ll share some tips that include things you may not have considered before setting off on your road trip.

 

Essential Safety Tips for the Novice Traveller – #1 Car Safety Checks

If you’re travelling on the road, whether hiring a car or using your own vehicle, it’s so essential to make sure your car is safe. From making sure the locks work to checking the car battery, you need to make sure you’re good to go in a safe and efficient manner.

Give your car a full overhaul, checking for any issues, and if you’re concerned ask your local garage to do it for you. You will most likely be on the road for a long time, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

 

Essential Safety Tips for the Novice Traveller – #2 Documents

Whether it’s your passport or your travel insurance documents, keep them safe! It’s always a good idea to take photocopies of documents and keep them in a separate place, in case one or the other is lost or stolen.

You can also keep copies of your documents on your Onedrive or any device you take with you. It’s so important to keep your documents safe, especially whilst travelling abroad.

When sorting out your luggage there are loads of tips and tricks online for packing. My biggest tips would be to make sure your luggage is clearly labelled, but also spread your clothing out between your luggage. So if you are travelling with others or as a family, spread your clothes across all suitcases so that if you lose a suitcase you will still have things to wear!

We lost a suitcase on the way back from Barcelona a few years ago and it had a mixture of clothes in, so we all *almost* lost something instead of one person losing everything…

 

Essential Safety Tips for the Novice Traveller – #4 Out & About

Before you go to your chosen destination/s check out the travel tips for that particular place. It will tell you the places that you need to be more careful in, and what to watch out for. My top tip would be to make sure you have a bag that goes across your body and that it’s very secure. You can use mini padlocks if you’re particularly nervous, but just being aware and not leaving your belongings out of your reach is key!

 

 

Essential Safety Tips for the Novice Traveller – #5 Location

When travelling, especially if it’s a solo trip, it’s important to tell people where you’re going. Plan your trip and tell your family and friends, keep in touch on a regular basis and check in to places on your phone to keep your safety a priority.
