Review: The Play That Goes Wrong, Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff

Last night I had the pleasure of attending WMC with my old theatre buddy and very good friend, R. It was so lovely to hang out again and the sun was shining, so I knew we’d have a lovely time…

The Play That Goes Wrong – What’s it about?

The Play That Goes Wrong is about a fictitious Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society and their performance of a ‘whodunnit’ murder mystery set in the 1920’s. As the title suggests, the play does not pan out as intended, with tonnes of slapstick, humour and wrong lines.

What I liked…

I really loved the energy from all of the performers. Honestly, it was like they were a little family working super hard to make the performances as entertaining as possible. They obviously clicked as a cast, or at least that’s how it appeared, and it’s lovely when you can see that kind of effort and teamwork play out on stage.

I also loved how much each performer put into their performances, in particular Aisha Numah as Sandra stood out for me. I loved her over-exaggerated performance, and just thought she was pretty wonderful.

The set was also really interactive, fun, and stressful (for me anyway!). But then, I am quite a jumpy person! But the audience absolutely loved it and they were laughing throughout.

What I didn’t like…

I am very particular when it comes to humour. I liked the fact it was non-offensive, and quite old fashioned. Both R and I said it was definitely something our parents would have enjoyed, but I often felt a bit concerned some things were real (I’m super gullible, anxious and autistic, so that makes sense I guess!).

Overall, it was a nice, lighthearted experience, and one I really needed! I loved the energy, from the cast and the audience, so even though it wasn’t my favourite performance ever, it was still really special.
