Summertime can be the most amazing time for families, and it’s often easier (and cheaper) to enjoy the sunshine in the comfort of your own home. The summer can feel like a stressful time, so keeping things simple (and fun) can make the summer exceptionally special…
Summertime Ideas: Outdoor Play Activities for Families
When it comes to outdoor play equipment, there’s so much choice out there. From slides to swings, there’s so much to choose from! I thought I’d share my top suggestions for at home outdoor play ideas, for small spaces and large gardens, there’s something for every family…
Climbing Frames
For the large garden, you can go for these gorgeous climbing frames. They’re perfect for keeping kids active over the summer, and they’re great for all kinds of play, from pirates to dens, you can create worlds with the right imagination! George and Molly can spend hours on climbing frames, creating new worlds and expanding their imagination, I jsut wish we had a garden big enough for one of our own!
Swing Sets
I also love large swing sets with a few different options on them. They always encourage all children to have a go, and they can choose their own level of engagement on the equipment provided. I remember as a child losing myself whilst swinging away, and then having to get off to allow other children a turn, so the idea of having one for just the family makes me feel all gooey inside!
Water, Sand & Mud
Water play tables are perfect for all sized gardens. George and Molly love water and sand play, in all kinds of weather, but the summer is perfect because the water keeps you cool and the play keeps your imagination fired! I love being served sand pie and petal lemonade, don’t you?!
Chalk
Using something as simple as chalk can change a boring day into a fun and energetic one! From hopscotch to simply drawing your favourite things, chalk play is perfect for those gardens with paving stones to allow children to express their creative side!
Water Fun!
Water battles are the perfect way to keep kids cool in the summer. You have so many choices, from water guns to water balloons to simply using a hose! George is obsessed with this kind of summertime play, and long may it continue!
Games
There are so many games to keep kids active in the garden. Here are a few to get you started:
- Giant Jenga
- Bouls
- Skittles
- Skipping
- Frisbee games
There’s so much choice out there, it’s just about looking at the options that would suit your home and garden! This kind of planning can save you money in the long run and provide many hours of fun and entertainment for the whole family during the summer months. And, if you only have a small yard (like us), you can always head to the local park for the big stuff and then use the smaller play activities in your own garden.
