*Collaborative post

If your home is looking a little boring and you want to spice things up a bit, you should decorate with some wall art. It is a simple way to bring a room to life and turn a blank wall into a great feature. However, it is important that you know how to decorate with wall art in the right way because there is more to it than simply hanging things on the wall. These are some of the most important rules to follow when decorating with wall art.

Use Something Unique

If you go into any home store, you will find loads of cheap wall art. But they’re all a bit boring and there are thousands of other people that have the exact same thing up in their home. If you want to create home decor that is special to you, you need to choose unique wall art. It is a lot more meaningful if you find a talented artist and buy an original from them, whether it be in the form of abstract flower paintings or celebrity portrait photos, to hang in your home. Alternatively, you could try to create your own wall art. Even if you are not a keen painter, why not create a photo collage of family pictures and hang that on the wall instead? You can also make some great wall art from old antiques like signs or even pieces of reclaimed wood. Something unique has much more impact than a piece of cheap mass produced wall art.

Get The Spacing Right

When you are hanging wall art, you need to be careful about overcrowding. It is possible to create a great feature with multiple pieces of art, but only if the spacing is correct. For example, if you have 4 big pieces on one wall, it looks overcrowded and ruins the effect. Equally, if you have lots of small pieces spaced very far apart, that can look odd as well. It’s best to use one large piece as a focal point and then add a few smaller pieces around it. There are no definite rules for spacing wall art but if you are a bit stuck, 2 inches between pieces is a good middle ground. You should also try to match the size of the piece to the size of the wall, so don’t hang a tiny piece right in the centre of a large wall.

Consider The Materials In The Room

When you are painting a wall, you have to consider the other materials in the room when choosing your colours. But a lot of people forget to do this when they are choosing wall art, and it can ruin the overall decor. For example, if you have wooden flooring in a room, it will look out of place if you have overly modern wall art. You would be much better off with something more traditional. Always consider the rest of the materials and the overall theme of the room when you are choosing wall art.

As long as you follow these 3 rules for hanging wall art, it is a great way to improve the decor in your home and make it more unique.
