5 Essential Things to Focus on When Starting a Small Businesses

1. Product

Making sure you have the perfect product can feel quite daunting, but if you can get this right, then you can focus on the other areas and make sales with products that are perfect. Rushing through a product is not a good idea, but it’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of it all. Focus on a good quality product and make it better. When we started KelZo Jewellery, we hit a few bumpy roads along the way, but eventually we knew what we were doing. Now, when we make something not up to our standard, we give it to customers for free!

2. Packaging

When it comes to packaging  we wanted to keep ours as minimal waste as possible. We use recyclable cardboard boxes, shredded tissue paper, compostable peanut and paper bags. All items are recyclable, and this feels good! We’re helping the planet, and every small business should be making an effort to ensure they’re doing this too!

3. Social Media Marketing

Getting your social media marketing plan together is important, but if you can’t stand it/it feels too much, and you have a budget, you could hire someone to run this for you. That being said, your client base will most likely want authenticity, and to see your face. So make sure you appear on social from time to time, not just your product! And don’t forget, utilise all the areas you can, from tweets to Instagram stories to Facebook Lives. See what works for you and go with it!

4. Audience

Finding your clients is key. But you need to know who they are first! Are they young/old? Well off or budgeting? For KelZo Jewellery, we know our main client is part of the LGBTQ+ community, and they like funky bright jewellery. They’re most like Bowie fans and love a little tipple on the weekends! Figure out your idea client, and sell to them!

5. Organisation

Being organised is key. We’re still learning this haha! Keep on top of orders, keep on top of your finances, and make sure you have specific down time. You can’t do it all, and you don’t want ot learn the hard way (like us) when you burn out.

We hope these tips have helped you focus in more on your business and how to make it work for you!
