The Black Queen is the latest addition to the very extraordinary Adventure Rooms in Cardiff. Situated along Newport Road, not very far from the city centre, we first visited Adventure Rooms to try out their Mad Scientist themed escape game.
It was so lovely to return and see Keiran again; he always has a warm welcome ready and waiting, and there are loads of warm-up games in the waiting area to get the grey matter going before you’re plunged into the game!
Don’t forget to think of a team name before you enter, so you can receive a certificate at the end of the game. One of our members came up with the great name of ‘Harem Scarem’, so with our team name decided we were ready to play!
After a brief safety chat with Keiran, your team is led into their chosen game and you’re left to figure out the rest by yourselves! Once you enter the game, you have 60 minutes to figure out the clues, get through the tasks and challenges and make it out before the clock reaches zero.
There is a screeen with the 60 minute countdown in each room so you can keep checking how much time you have left. It really is a test of teamwork and playing to your strengths. Being patient is also extremely important, otherwise you can end up losing your mind!
The Black Queen is dark and spooky, with twists and turns along the way. We entered through the doors and the countdown began. Everyone scurried around (in a good way!) and found the things they needed to find along the way to help us escape…
I spent time with one team member, then another, to figure out different puzzles, and it was great to work as a team without a single squabble along the way!
Obviously, I don’t want to give too much away, but the Black Queen is a dark and sophisticated game, with quite a large focus on numbers. Don’t get me wrong, there are elements of surprise and other themes running through it, but I felt there was a strong sense of numbers, maths and number related puzzles.
The theme ran through the entire game, from black and white chequer boards to hidden gems and more, I loved how dark the whole game felt. It moved seamlessly from each challenge to the next, without any confusion so we all managed to work as a team to complete each section until we reached the end.
I love how there aren’t red herrings lying around trying to trip you up (apart from some well thought out props and decorations); everything in each room is important, useful and essential. I particularly loved the interactive elements of the game, allowing me to work one-on-one with other members of the team.
I love how each person had a strength within the game, everyone bounced off each other, or stepped back and waited in the right moment, and it all fell into place and we eventually made it out of the Black Queen’s grasp…
I bet you’d like to know if we made it out in time?
Well, I can safely say ‘Harem Scarem’ made it out within 60 minutes and with a whopping 16 minutes and 3 seconds to spare! 16 MINUTES AND 3 SECONDS! We rocked it and I can safely say it left us wanting more!
I love Adventure Rooms and I think Keiran is building a lovely base for some amazing, team-building and addictive games suitable for work colleagues, friends and families. I just can’t wait for his next room!
