Whether we like it or not, the internet can be a dangerous place. It’s like a playground without the faces or the adults to reprimand the trolls or the viruses, leaving us all open to different kinds of threats and dangers.
I’m keen to protect both my technology and my children from these hidden parts of the internet, so I thought I’d share the ways in which this is possible.
1. Talk to your children
The most important way to keep your children safe online is to have open conversations with them. Talk to them about who could be on the other end of the internet, read books and watch videos together about internet safety. Youtube is an amazing resource, and we also discovered this very clever book, ‘Chicken Cliking’ at the library a few weeks ago; it’s perfect for this topic.
2. Purchase software
There are many software options available to purchase that will protect your PC, such as SoftwareKeep. You can protect your PC from viruses and other hidden dangers, this will prevent hackers and other malicious content from gaining access to your computer.
3. Parental controls
I’m not a big fan of parental controls, but each to their own. There are many types available and most devices have them already installed for you to change in the settings.
4. Green padlock
Only ever enter personal information on a secured network. If you see the green padlock at the top next to the website address, you’re good to go.
5. NEVER share your password
It might sound simple, but it’s a good rule to stick to. Sharing your password could lead to all kinds of trouble, so keep it under lock and key in your mind!
I hope these tips have been helpful, stay safe online guys…
